The Outside In isn’t your grandma’s modern jazz band. Rocking out since 2022, soaring melodies, passionate solos, head-banging grooves, intimate and reflective ballads all define the music, largely composed by pianist Ethan Ostrow. The band can be described as a blend between the Brian Blade Fellowship, Snarky Puppy, the Pat Metheny Group, and something completely new. Featuring some of the most exciting up-and-coming musicians in New York, they are quickly establishing themselves with their deep, lush, and powerful sound.
"Ostrow's original compositions are dynamic, passionate, and gorgeous”

Nick “The Marzinator” Marziani is very good at the Saxophone, a fact you will become aware of when you hear him play the Saxophone. Originally from Philadelphia, Nick’s association with the Mob has become increasingly suspicious, and yet beautiful like a Tulip basking in the sunrise of a new day. You can find Nick playing with pop, funk and rock bands across NYC, and with his own smooth-pop-jazz project which we believe he should call “Smooth and Creamy.”

Ethan Ostrow (Piano) is known as the “Weird Al” of The Outside In, and writes band bios so good you’d think they’re a cry for help. He also ran out of jokes, so here's his normal bio. Hailing from Berkeley, CA, Ethan has headlined and performed at some of the Bay Area’s finest venues including Yoshi’s, The Fox Theater, The Freight & Salvage, Maybeck Studio, and more. Ethan frequently combines his love of music with his passion for cancer charity work, and is proud to have raised over $55,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through his "Concert for a Cure" series.

Michael "The Gun" Hilgendorf (Guitar) is a radiant, Christ-like figure who appeared suddenly in the NYC music scene from an unknown world (some call it “A Suburb Outside of Detroit”). He spread his gospel unto the Chicago scene for a number of years before his recent crusade to the East Coast. Hichael Milkendorf has made the brave choice to never play notes or rhythms that are bad, making him the ideal musician. He also owes me $5.

Armed with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a beautiful smile, Shuji “Shuj” Watanabe (Bass) is always ready to throw down on the bandstand. Coming to us all the way from Kyoto, Shuji is the rock of The Outside In, keeping the groove steady and the beat funky. You can now find him residing in Brooklyn, doing whatever he does when he’s not obliterating every song we play. Ladies, he’s bilingual! 🤤

With an uncanny ability to play the drums with sticks, brushes, and a number of other phallic objects, Quinton “Quinton Cain” Cain has quickly risen through the ranks of the NYC music scene to become a first-call drummer for this band. Originally from Kansas City (whichever state you think is better), Quinton prefers a hot, wet climate. He’s also the drive, the power, and the heart of The Outside In. Pretty cool guy, 4.5 stars.
